Ron Rivera says he thinks the Panthers can win 10*games

Posted by Mike Florio on August 6, 2011, 9:12 AM EDT

AP
At a time when coaches like Rex Ryan have shown that it’s OK to talk publicly about goals and aspirations, another head coach who can wear monogrammed shirts with “RR” on the sleeves (although slightly smaller) has taken a page from Rex’s playbook.

Panthers coach Ron Rivera recently said that he thinks his new team can do what each of the other three teams in their division did last year — win 10 games.

“I’m optimistic about who we are and who we can become,” Rivera said, per Steve Reed of CarolinaGrowl.com.* “Would I like to win them all?* Absolutely.* Do I think we can win 10?* Yes. I think we can win 10.”

Rivera then apparently tried to backtrack a bit.* “I think we can win 10, 11, nine, eight, I’m not sure,” Rivera said.* “To put a number out would be unfair to our guys.* But I will say the one thing I want more than anything else is to play hard because I think that gives you chance to win.”

Rivera shouldn’t have backtracked.* He’s got a young team that could use a little confidence.

And as we’ve learned from Rex Ryan, there’s nothing wrong with a little confidence.

I'm not sure what he's supposed to say...is he supposed to say, "Damn, I'm a first year head coach. We've got a rookie and a second year at QB. No mini-camps. No OTA's. We are in a killer division with the SB champ from 2 years ago (the Saints) and a team that a lof of people are picking as an NFC favorite this year (Atlanta) and a team that is up and coming in Tampa Bay. If we win four games and they should build a monument to my coaching ability"?

Nobody who isn't smoking crack thinks the Panthers can win ten games. Hell, they'll be lucky to win 4 or 5...

I think this Panthers team can win 6 or 7 realistically. 10 is talking out of your ass.

If the 2010 Bucs could do it, really any team can if they catch some breaks...

They might not win one division game. 10 games....hahahahahahaha! I'm sure he thinks Cammy is going to run all over the oppositions D as well. What a joke this has to be.

While it is true that there is always a "bubble up" team or two every year in the NFL...

There are a bunch of differences between Tampa Bay last year and the Panthers this year.
First, it was not the HC's first year in TB last year.
Second, there was no work stoppage last year and the Bucs benefited from the mini-camps and OTA's that Rivera and the Panthers have not had this year.
Third, the Bucs got great play from their second year QB. I don't think anybody thinks Clausen or Newton is going to give the Panthers the kind of QB play the Bucs got last year from Freeman. Freeman has a chance to be a very good NFL QB. Nobody thinks that of Clausen and the jury is, obviously, still out on Newton.

The Panthers could easily not win a game in their division. And even with a fourth place schedule, it's hard to see them winning more than four or five games.

This. He's supposed to instill confidence and his team and be optimistic.

Yeah, he is just in the position where its hard to admit the truth. The odds are against him, but at least he is optimistic. Good luck.

let me say i am from this crap state and hate the PAINT-THERS as this is how the team is pronounced by our redbird fans!

but i do think they will be a good team to bet on! 10 wins i don't think so! 7-8 yeah very possible..

1. mite have the best rb's in the game, stewart williams sutton and goodson are all good backs, solid new fb in fiammetta! lots of depth here

2, o-line is solid also, took way to many injuries last year gross and otah went down early! a really good run blocking line

3. nice new additions at te, olsen will be moved out and shockey a bit old but smart player will help, but hartstock the big blocking te is a monster on run blocks and should add nice options in running game

4. the wr's are not as bad as some may think, smith still has great hands and a good step, lafell and nanee x bolts player should fill in nice and make some plays!

5. d-line is solid and young, brown and james hardy a guy i saw lots of in college is a play maker, if he stays healthy i think he turns some heads, johnson they resigned and over paid for but still a good player

6. lb's very solid underrated group here, beason is a stud, davis connor and anderson are all good not great lb's and should do well in rivera def mind set system, they have some spped and athletes on lb side

trouble is qb and secondary.... secondary is gonna have some trouble! cam will be ok as i look for them to dish in some wildcat schemes and play some ball control and use the weapons in the run game and solid o-line to hang in games and pull some unexpected wins off

i give the panthers a win over falcons and bucks as they will match up decent in the def vs the off! and the def of bucs and falcons is not set up to handle strong run games! the saints however should kill the panthers twice

1st 4 weeks arz gb jax and chic! 2 wins is very possible here.. like arz and jax to be the wins
next 4 weeks atl, no wash and minny at home, again 2 wins possible here, like wash and minny at home to be those wins
bye
then 4 games tenn det tb indy, take wins over tenn and tb here
final 4 games atl no hou tb, 1 maybe 2 but im go with the hou game as this is a crap game this damn panther team would win... and the home game vs atl may be a good shot to knock off atl for a win

just my 2 cents, if i had it my way i would root for an 0-16 season!

If the Panthers go 8-8, they should rename the Lombardi trophy after Rivera!

QB and secondary problems are BIG problems!

First place REDSKINS

For the second time in five days, Washington has done just that: churning, churning, churning toward ugly but effective victories. And now it is in first place in the wretched NFC East, with a 4-7 record that won’t glow proudly from the top of the standings but still screams progress for an organization where progress has come hard.
